Quality street 1956
This quality street advert was published in 1956. Obviously, this time was a lot different to how it is now. In 1956 women were viewed as almost materialistic items or even a possession rather than a human. Women were stereotypically seen as cleaners or just used for sexual pleasure. This is shown in the advert as both women going in to kiss the man enticingly. The punchline states “what a delicious dilemma!” which a feminist would say is dehumanizing the 2 women and comparing them to chocolate. This also shown in the mise en scene as the womens clothing match the chocolate wrappers. Further connoting that eating chocolate can be just as pleasurable as women can be. This reinforces the fact that women were just seen as ordinary objects around the house. The male, a stereotypical middle class breadwinner is holding the box of chocolates above his crotch which could be denoting a phallic symbol within the poster. He is also centrally framed showing his importance and the male controlled society in 1956. The mise en scene connotes the male dominance in a patriarchal society. The women being framed to the side of the male also clearly shows their position in society and just get brushed off by the males. The ‘quality street’ logo is in purple and elegant handwriting. This connotes that the chocolate is for middle- or upper-class people who can afford it. Purple is also a royal colour reinforcing the fact this chocolate is for upper-class people.

Beyonce formation music video
The opening scene in the video is a long shot of beyonce sitting casually on top of a police car in the after mass of the new orleans flood caused by hurricane Katrina. Instantly this connotes her power within society. This could connote that police have no power over her. this is a powerful meaning as black people in America suffer from a lot of police brutality. Also subverts the stereotype of black people being dehumanized and belittled by police. In the background it also shows the destruction of homes. this can also sow how powerful she is in the celebrity world with her massive fanbase. this subverts stereotypes as males are predominantly more favoured than women. there's a long shot of African-american women in a wig shop connoting the change in racial stereotypes further connoting that coloured people have more of a voice in America than they did in the past. also shows the culture of the afro hair which subverts the stereotype that women with long straight hair can be considered 'beautiful'. ironic as she posted the video during black history month. black power is further empathised by a graffiti on the wall towards a SWAT team saying 'Stop Shooting Us'.

  1. Some good use of key terminology and effective explanation. Can be developed into a good exam answer with some more careful planning
