black panther
how does it fit into the franchise?
-it fits into the franchise as Black Panther was first introduced into the MCU in 'Civil War' film but wasn't clear whether he was a hero or a villain as he seeking revenge of the murder of his dad. Following this feature the shortly followed up with a film of his own making him the first black super hero to have his own film in 2018.
What makes it different?
-This film is different as they hired a black director making the film more personal and diverse to the African community. They also imbedded African traditions and settings into the films this is shown through their traditional clothing, chants and peircing. In the trailer of Black Panther as well as making him look like a hero they image him as a leader and a warrior something which is common in African tradition and tribes. despite the never seen before (in the mcu) technological advancements and the wealth of wakanda there's a wide shot showing rural areas with market stalls and people wearing traditional clothing showing the originality and uniqueness of the directors intentions and reinforces stereotypes of the African community. the soldiers of wakanda still use basic weapons such as spears, knives and shields this also connotes. it also has similarities to the Harlem renascence. which was a community of black people becoming musicians/philosiphers and poets and thriving together in a black community in the 1920s to the point white people were embedding their ways of music the links to the film as the antagonist is a white male wanting the precious treasures of wakanda and what their riches are based from, vibranium the metal is used to create technology and weapons the outside world has never seen before. the film also bases itself on afrofuturism which explores the combination of non-fiction science and African history and culture. first introduced by Mark Derry in 1993.
What makes it successful?
Black panther first released concept art during 2017 Comicon and received more recognition than the NBA playoffs which is one of the biggest sporting events in the USA. the movie brings a moment of positivity to a group of people often not the centerpiece of Hollywood movies. the movie was so inspirational it was able to gross profits from all audiences. was politically a regressive moment and challenges the white-navist movement and subtlety has digs at oppressors. People who may of been racially abused in the past may use the film as escapism and use Wakanda as a 'happy place' and identify themselves with the wakandan people. the film even caused people to see this as an opportunity and a 'beacon of hope' and start charities/GoFundme to raise awareness for other black kids and their communities tasing over $400,000 in total. it also became one of the most highest grossing films ever making over $1 billion in sales.
Additional Notes:
people of colour only make up 13.6% of film leads or a 3/1
directed by Ryan Coogler(who also directed Creed)
